About me

I came to the San Francisco Fed's Economic Research Department in 1985 after a short stint at the NY Fed and five years as a professor at the NYU Graduate School of Business. I managed the International Research section for many years, helped start the Bank’s Center for Pacific Basin Studies in 1990 -- serving as its second Director ---and helped inaugurate the annual series of Pacific Basin Economic Research and Asia Economic Policy conferences. I also made numerous trips to Asia, accompanying SF Fed presidents and Board governors, including Bob Parry, Jay Powell, John Williams, and Janet Yellen. In my research career, I have focused on a myriad of topics including international trade patterns, capital flows and controls, financial crises, currency arrangements, monetary policy transmission, and Pacific Basin economic developments. In addition to publishing in academic journals and other places of note, I've edited, co-edited, and/or contributed papers to seven published Pacific Basin conference volumes.
